The Miami Auto Show begins this Friday Oct 23 and one very eagerly anticipated vehicle will be there: the all new for 2010 Jaguar XJ. The new XJ is not only significant because its luxury maker has a storied past and tremendous cachet, but also because its maker is going through troubling times and this car needs to be successful if Jaguar is to be around for much longer.
The XJ’s design has changed little in the several decades since its debut, but what looked avantgarde in the 1960s says nothing but grandpa in the new millennium. So the biggest change is with the car’s overall look, inside and out. Positively fresh and modern, its look is influenced by the smaller XF, and the interior mixes plenty of leather and wood in what has to be the most high-tech cabin in the industry: look for a dual-view nav screen in the console, driver and passenger each see different images on the same screen.
While the looks are all new, the bones underneath are actually pretty much the same as the previous XJ, though that shouldn’t be a problem because its all aluminum structure was and is far more of an engineering achievement than what competitors offer. Light weight means a more rewarding drive and more efficient fuel consumption. The new XJ needs to be a hit and early indications prove that it might be: the recently introduced Neiman Marcus Edition XJ sold out in just four hours, each costing $105,000.
