The new Camaro has been a hit for GM since they started selling it this past spring, even outselling the Mustang every month so far. But while Ford has the 540hp GT500 to brag about, GM has had to make do with the its regular V8 SS model that puts out only 426hp. This, as you can see, puts the new Chevy at a disadvantage in the eyes of car mags, spec-sheet racers, and school boys everywhere. But according to GM’s very own Ed Wellburn, thats about to change shortly.
The Z28 Camaro was cancelled early on because of all the trouble GM was going through. Something about not having the tens of millions to properly develop it, very high horsepower being in poor taste, the Obama administration calling the shots and, oh yeah, bankruptcy. So its understandable that a super Camaro was put on the backburner for a little bit. But the faithful understood that it was just a delay rather than outright cancellation, as it would be unthinkable to have a Camaro, and the right engine, and the expertise, and the honor to defend and not engineer a GT500 killer for more than a couple years at most.
So without revealing an exact sale date, Wellburn confirmed to Inside Line that the Z28 is back on track, is being worked on right now, and should be available some time next year, likely as a 2011 model. Count on a version of the Cadillac CTS-V’s motor, a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 that puts out 556hp and propels the 4300lb Caddy to 60 in a blink over 4 secs. The Z28 should weigh in about 300lbs less, you do the math. 60mph in the high 3s. Lets hope pray GM doesn’t get sidetracked again.
