The MINI E is an all electric Cooper that is being used to test out potential new product for BMW’s premium small car brand. The car is being made available in a pretty small batch of only 500 units, and is limited to lease customers only in parts of California, New Jersey, and New York. For a monthly lease payment of $850, lucky lessees get to experience firsthand what MINI’s electric car plans are. As you might imagine, all 500 have been snapped up already.
There’s no word yet on what kind of performance the E offers, except that it does give you a total range between charges of 120 miles, and that it takes 3 hours to charge on a 220v outlet or a whopping 26 hours on a more common 110v outlet. While those stats are fine for most daily commutes and will likely mean a daily charging routine to overcome any range anxiety, they do illustrate the limitations of current battery tech and why hybrid systems like that in the Chevy Volt will be more prevalent for mass market models that need more traditional range.
