The 1990s have been long gone for a while now, and unfortunately, so has Mazda’s RX-7. Having been effectively replaced by the RX-8 in the market, enthusiast’s hearts and minds have remained another matter entirely. Ever since the low slung two-seater was replaced by a larger half door-backseat toting sibling, wishful thinking has been rampant ever since about when a real RX-7 would come back.
Fans can now start obsessing over the sports car’s return as Autocar is reporting that Mazda’s design chief Ikua Maeda has completed a set of sketches for the new RX-7, put them in the right hands, and is now campaigning to get work started on bringing the car back. Sounds like a milestone to me. Maeda also says that the new model will probably be a little higher end with a more upscale interior. Count on a more powerful version of their latest 1.6-liter rotary putting out as much as 300hp.
Any word on when a return might happen is still a bit premature, but if the project is serious expect to see a concept version some time next year.
