After you’ve done the research on pricing your car and getting all the details together for a car ad, you’ll need to let people know that its for sale. The more people that know the faster you will sell your car! Remember, trading your car in at the dealer will cost you anywhere from 10x-15x more than selling it yourself. Thats obviously a bargain, but a private party sale still has a cost associated with it in terms of time and money. You’ll need to choose a few places to get the word out that your car is for sale.
“flyers..word of mouth..signs”
First, there are a few free things you can do. Bulletin boards where you can pin up flyers of your car are an option. Done right, this can be a bit of work though. There’s also the old word of mouth thing where you tell your friends and family to tell their friends and family about your car. Word of mouth is pretty powerful, if you know more than a few people. Putting a For Sale on your car is an old standby that works 24×7, even when you’re not there. Except that writing on your windows and taping up a flimsy sign can be a hassle.
“print ads..over 80% of car shoppers look online first”
Newspaper and other print ads are the next thing that come to mind. These types of ads do have a wide readership and will provide your car with some exposure. There are a couple problems though. Its expensive for what you get, usually some text, maybe 1 picture, and an ad that runs for a couple weeks. Not the best value for your money, especially when you learn that something like over 80% of car shoppers look online first, but it is an option.
“Autotrader and Cars.com…increased competition from professional dealers that work every day to convert shoppers into buyers..”
Next are your online classified ads. The big ones like Autotrader and Cars.com are obvious choices as they do get a lot of exposure. But they accept about 10x as many dealer ads than private party ads. Why would you want increased competition from professional dealers that work every day to strongarm convert shoppers into buyers?Â
Usually, buyers have to wade through 5-8 pages of pure dealer ads until they get to the private party ads, which are still mixed in with dealer ads anyway.  Craigslist is a good, free way to advertise your car online. But their service is popular with scam artists and include a “wide variety” of services and ads that have little to do with selling cars. Despite these negatives, you will get increased exposure so all these options are worth considering.
